Walk #25: Swan's Way

Distance: 1.5 miles
Steps: 369
Difficulty: 4
"Here's an intriguing combination - a short walk with some really steep steps. This is a Silver Lake circuit with great views, interesting houses, and some of the longest, steepest staircases in the city, great for cross-training and cardio." Taken from Secret Stairs by Charles Fleming.

What a way to wake up on a clear LA Sunday morning! We walked our last Silver Lake walk from Secret Stairs (I know I'll definitely repeat them once I finish all 42) and again, I was not disappointed. We began our walk at Effie Street and Silver Lake Boulevard; a very familiar starting point as we have done several walks in this neighborhood. Great views, a mix of homes, and of course, friends to share with!
Oops, I forgot to include a group shot on this walk. Present were: Charles (of course), Willie, Jessica, Ines, Enrique, Mark, and me.After a brief walk up the hill we encountered the cool modern home pictured above. Soon after that the torture began. Not ONE, not TWO, but THREE steep stairways - one after the other.
#1 - 77 steps
#2 - 110 steps
A view from the top of stairway #2
#3 - 100 steps
On the way up the 3rd staircase we caught a glimps of the Silver Lake reservoir.
When we recovered at the top we came across this home for sale. Hey, a guy can dream.
I can't explain this, I just take the pictures.
This hillside has some really interesting modern homes.
Check out the minaret on the roof of this Moorish-style house.

The Raphael Soriano-designed Lipetz House dates to 1936.

I don't know if this is permanent.
The views are really spectacular.
More Moorish touches. The San Gabriel Mountains in the background.

Can you see the skyscrapers of Downtown LA through the haze??

Thankfully our last staircase (82 steps) went down!
At the bottom of the hill we stopped by a familiar place for breakfast; no, not 7Eleven. LA Mill Coffee has excellent coffee and food and although not cheap, it's a great place and lots of people to watch pass by and to rest up on a glorious Sunday morning.
Feel free to join me as I discover hidden parts of Los Angeles and tackle the remaining 7 stair walks.

  1. This was one of my favorite neighborhoods from our recent walks. Something very cozy and comfortable about it. There are some really great pictures in this post. Love the one of you guys reflected in the glass.

We missed a couple weekends, and it's taking longer for me to write about it. But I'm still hanging in there!!

  4. Hi Robert - Sorry to have just discovered this site now - are you going to start it all over from scratch? Was wondering if there's a walk from Glendale Blvd. up to Silver Ridge Avenue on the East side of the reservoir? Many thanks!

  5. Hi,thanks for your comment. I won't be starting from scratch. I think we'll be selecting our favorites and I hope to make them less structured. I don't know about the Silver Ridge part. We have walked all over Silver Lake though...

  6. I grew up in Silverlake & jog around the reservoir still. I used to babysit twins at that Moorish house! The dining room had a cool domed ceiling.

  7. Hi where are the entrances to these stairs? I was trying to find them on Google Street View, but couldn't seem to find it. Is it up Effie street behind the restaurant Resevoir?

    thank you!
